In the August 2013 Slowinski at-large, I have prepared a self-assessment on tournament preparations. This is designed to educate, evaluate as well as facilitate additional reflection on how you can be best prepared for tournament play. Do you deep clean your equipment? How often do you change the surface? Do you think about the influence of humidity and temperature on lane transition? How well will you score in this self-assessment?

In the December installment of Slowinski at-large, I introduce the idea of an international bowling skill score number as a method to evaluate a bowler's overall skill level (versatility, accuracy, power, repeatability & knowledge). I believe an International Bowling Skill Score Number system will allow us to compare any two bowlers worldwide. With the use of C.A.T.S. or DigiTrax with Bowlers Map, coaches can assess players allowing a more thorough identification of strengths and weaknesses.

After the Women's World Championships, Bowling This Month Editor Jim King asked me to write an Off The Top of My Head article on the "upset" of Malaysia over the United States team. As an American, who works as a bowling coach at the national level, in Malaysia, I have a unique insight into both the USA and Malaysian bowling programs. So, I agreed to offer my insight and analysis. Specifically, I explore whether the win by Malaysia was an upset or not. You might be surprized at my answer. When ex-WTBA president Dr. PS Nathan called for a World Symposium on the state of bowling, in 2000, he brought together some of the most knowledgeable names in the bowling industry. From this meeting, the world standard of short and long patterns emerged as well as many other important updates. For those who care about the sport of bowling, this was one of the most important meetings in our sport's history. Read the report of the Technical Committee, written by Sid Allan, here. The Technical Report also shares how the committee defined who the best bowler was.... Click to read more and download the report. |
