In this month's slowinski at-large (June 2012), I introduce readers to the dynamic spare shooting system with the goal of getting bowlers to think more reflectively about how pattern length and lane transition can impact spare shooting proficiency. After reading the article, it is my hope that each bowler will customize a spare shooting system that is more dynamic with lane play considerations at the core.

AVAILABLE NOW In the May Slowinski at large, in Bowling This Month, I introduce the concept of the downswing angle and how to measure it for instructional and evaluation purposes. For elite bowlers, the downswing angle is measured from behind as the ball path travels from the top of the swing through the downswing. For the best players, the ball moves inward toward the player’s body and is one of the most important movements of a top notch player. An efficient downswing angle is a result of the movement of the player’s torso, forearm, and wrist. Specifically, a great downswing is a product of lateral spine tilt (lateral flexion) and supination/opening of the forearm and wrist to establish a strong position into the release. In the April Slowinski at-large, I share with readers a detailed exploration of launch angle. Often misunderstood and rarely applied accurately, the goal of this article is help players and coaches develop a more enriched comprehension of launch angle especially with the line of intent of the player as well as launch angle changes based on moves to deal with transition. For example, how does launch angle change with a 2-1 move? Historically in the sport of bowling, the concept of launch angle has been utilized extensively. Yet, for nearly all bowlers and coaches, this remains a relative concept. For example, we often hear statements such as tighten up the line or open it up. Due to the lack of specificity, there lacks a mathematical comprehension of specific launch angles related to moves or explicit target lines.
