Drills

Here are a collection of drills that I have developed to help bowlers improve specific skills.  This is not an exhaustive list of my drills but will provide you with some helpful tips.

DYDS # 1 (Drop Your Damn Shoulder Drill)

DYDS # 2 (Drop Your Damn Shoulder Drill 2)
http://bowlingknowledge.info/images/stories/dyds%20drill%202.pdf

The DYDS drills help to holistically alter the physical game body position to create more space leading to better swing lines and energy transfer to the bowling ball.  These drills are great to more naturally create space due to more natural lateral spine tilt (leaning) in the approach.  With more lateral spine tilt, a bowler will create more space for the swing slot, improves hand position into the release, improves accuracy due to the head position relative to the swing, improves balance at the foul line.  DYDS also is a catalyst for improved foot work.  Start a Revolution.  Drop Your Damn Shoulder!

Foul Line Drill

This is primarily a release drill.  Specifically, the goal is to set the hand in a strong position (index finger forward and slightly under the bowling ball).  In addition, the major objective is to start in this position to maximize the length in which the fingers travel (thing lengthening the arc traveled under and around the bowling ball) to create more revolutions.  Moreover, the drill is intended to promote a long and low follow-through.

2-Handed Foul Line Drill
This drill is designed specifically to help a bowler adapt the needed lateral and forward spine tilt as well as the hand position of elite two-handed bowlers.

Through the Face Drill

I designed this drill to help bowlers improve swing movement as well as keep the hand in-line with the elbow to transfer energy to the bowling ball.   This drill will help a bowler become comfortable with space creation, swing direction, release and follow-through.

Lou Caires reports improvement after implementing Coach Slowinski's "Through the Face" Drill. Lou recently shot 615 & 674 on the WTBA Montreal sport pattern. "These two weeks since this drill are the first in 30+ week of bowling on sport patterns that I has no Brooklyns.... I was much more solid at the line, was able to lay the ball down sooner, and it was much easier to hit my mark."

Swing Practice Drill

I designed this drill to improve the complete swing movement, from swing start to release.

 Swing and Slide Drill

A one-step drill to promote improved body position, swing direction, torso rotation as well as smoother transition from the swing to finish.

SPARE SHOOTING DRILL

The spare shooting drill can be done alone or in partners.

  • On the first shot, the bowler throws the ball straight down 20 in an effort to hit the head pin directly.  This will likely leave corner pin combinations.
  • Shoot the remaining pins.
  • Alternate shooting left-side and right side spares.  For example, this method will likely leave the 4-7 & 6-10, often together as the big-4
  • You can spice this drill up by consecutive conversions.  You must make 10 right-side spares in-a-row before moving on to the left-side spares.
  • Or, for every miss, you subtract points.  The bowler or team must earn 10 or 20 points.  If they miss, one point is subtracted.
  • If a bowler is having difficulty throwing straight, try asking them to lead with the elbow through the target.  Emphasize through the target rather than to the target.

PUSHAWAY DRILL

Purpose: To improve stance and pushaway consistency.  In addition, the drill supports improving the timing step of a 5-step approach.  Finally, it contributes to a free swing.  An outstanding drill that can be done at home....

FOLLOW-THROUGH DRILL

Purpose: To break a bowler's habit of following through with too much upward moton or too far to their back.  Promotes a long and low follow-through needed in today's game.  Included is a discussion about why the long and low follow-through is needed and a coaching method to break the bad habit is presented.  The coach can use the second article as a hand-out to support the drill
